One of my daughters showed me this tweet:
I then delighted her by giving her a brief explanation of its legalities and told her that people have been convicted for tweeting false or misleading information, so please be careful.
Ignoring the message of the tweet, and pretending that he wrote ‘you’re’, let’s look at the line “who her mum and dad killed over 10 years ago”, I suggested.
If Madeleine McCann’s parents haven’t actually been convicted of murder – and this twitterer doesn’t put the line in quote marks or use ‘allegedly’ after it – he’s saying that they did commit the crime.
As far as I understand it, the McCanns could take the twitterer to court saying that he is factually wrong as they have not been convicted and he has defamed their character.
