Following redundancy, someone gave me some advice which I’ve never forgotten.

He suggested that I “demonstrate my hunger”.

And now, thanks to the internet, it’s much easier for people to do that.

I’d urge kids to work out what it is they want to do (reminding them that their choice doesn’t have to be permanent) and just get on and do it: volunteer, start writing, shooting, designing, editing, painting, planting, making or whatever else and maybe try to build a portfolio or track record and collect testimonials.

Then, later, in a job interview, the hiring manager will be able to compare one person’s hunger, desire and initiative with another’s.
