Up-sells give you the opportunity to buy a version of the same product which is larger, more luxurious or better in some way. Often offered when you’re about to make a purchase.

Down-sells are offers made when you’re about to empty your online shopping basket, the opportunity to buy a slimmed-down, less expensive version of the product.

Cross-sells are offers also made just prior a purchase for products which are not enhancements on the item but complementary. It’s the chrome holder to house the business cards you’ve just ordered, or the ‘Private & Confidential’ stamp to go with the envelopes you’ve just bought…or the chips to go with your Big Mac.
