Over the years, I’ve heard people talk about a need for schools to teach people knowledge for life, or ‘life skills’, such as:
- How to fill in a form
- The most cost-effective ways to buy a car
- How banks make a profit
- How to cook a healthy meal, rather than biscuits or cup cakes
Those subjects are still relevant.
Using the internet, we can add to that list:
- How to shop around for the best energy deal or car insurance
- How to send and receive money in different currencies more cheaply than via banks
- Understanding agendas: what might ISPs, governments, social networks, Google, bloggers, not-for-profits and large businesses want from you/to keep from you, and why?
With such knowledge, kids would grow up to be more empowered and able to control their own decision-making, online and off.
