Over the years, I’ve heard people talk about a need for schools to teach people knowledge for life, or ‘life skills’, such as:

  • How to fill in a form
  • The most cost-effective ways to buy a car
  • How banks make a profit
  • How to cook a healthy meal, rather than biscuits or cup cakes

Those subjects are still relevant.

Using the internet, we can add to that list:

  • How to shop around for the best energy deal or car insurance
  • How to send and receive money in different currencies more cheaply than via banks
  • Understanding agendas: what might ISPs, governments, social networks, Google, bloggers, not-for-profits and large businesses want from you/to keep from you, and why?

With such knowledge, kids would grow up to be more empowered and able to control their own decision-making, online and off.
