When I left De Montfort university with my without-honours media studies degree, they sent me a letter basically saying, ‘Thanks for studying there and here’s what you achieved’.
And it was addressed to Pail Perry.
I laughed about it – still do, 25 years later – but of course it’s not very good, is it? Three years of study on their brand-new curriculum and they seemed to put even less effort into that letter than I put into my work on the course.
I suppose my point is that they didn’t care and I’ve given them three out of five ever since.
I’d like kids to understand that when they care about their work, their relationships, their effort and their attention to detail, it matters because it shows – now more than ever: potential employers will Google them and judge which candidate appears to care most based on what turns up.
