Uptown Top Ranking
There’s another Alexa, also owned by Amazon, that for some is more useful than the one that provides assistance with setting alarms, pressing a button somewhere at home, or searching on Google.
Alexa.com is a different beast.
It reports on web traffic and ranks sites according to popularity, listing the top 500 sites on the web and sorting them by country and category.
According to Alexa.com, the top ten sites in the UK are:
- Google.com
- Youtube.com
- Reddit.com
- Google.co.uk
- Amazon.co.uk
- bbc.co.uk
- Wikipedia.org
- Ebay.co.uk
- Ladbible.com
- Netflix.com
Someday
AI is amazing and already used in so many ways.
But in many cases, it’s not quite up to the job.
Take, for example, the translation app that you can use with your phone’s camera to scan, ‘read’ and translate text in a foreign language to ‘read’:
I’m not exactly sure what meal this Tokyo vending machine is offering but there’s a good chance it’s not red-headed ball with one-and-a-half balls.
And then there’s Otter, a voice-recording and transcription app:
Again, possibly slightly off the mark. I’m not sure the speaker said “for your frog?” when I recorded him.
So AI is not quite there yet, but it soon will be.
20/20
It’s easy to work all day, starting at a screen, without giving your eyes a break.
So here’s an idea – ’20/20/20′ – that might help:
- Every 20 minutes, stop looking at your screen
- For at least 20 seconds
- By looking at something at least 20 metres away
News of the World
Google has updated its algorithms to show more original reporting in search and Google News results.
Original reporting will rank higher in both Google search results and Google News, including Google Discover (a feed of topics that Google thinks you’ll be interested in seeing, without specifically searching for it), and stories will stay at the top of the news cluster for longer.
“This means readers interested in the latest news can find the story that started it all, and publishers can benefit from having their original reporting more widely seen.” Richard Gingras, vice-president of Google News
The Robots
What is it with robots?
On the one hand, I read headlines such as “Ex-Google worker fears ‘killer robots’ could cause mass atrocities“, about an engineer who warns that AI might also accidentally start a war.
While in Japan, there’s a different view. Here, the robots we fear are welcomed as they protect and serve with respect, dignity and humility. They’re even designed to be small to avoid intimidating humans.

In The Midnight Hour
What’s the best time to post on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn?
Hootsuite, the social media management platform, recently published a blog post that answers the question.
The best time, not surprisingly, is “whenever your audience is most likely to see and engage with your content”, but Hootsuite’s post delves deeper (for example, saying “timing varies depending on industry and your specific audience”).
The post is long and includes links to relevant information on other pages.
But it could be really useful if you use social media for your business. Click here to read it.
