There are companies online whose profit comes from methods that slip under the radar of some of their ‘customers’.
Essentially, these companies are trading on apathy and a lack of attention because they make money from people who don’t realise, from month to month, that they’re paying for a service they don’t want.
Here’s an example:
If you buy train tickets from thetrainline.com, you might be offered a free 30-day trial by another firm after you’ve bought your tickets.
The second firm will offer discounts and cashback deals, and many people sign up not realising that following the trial, they’ll be charged £15 per month until they realise what’s happened.
It’s the same as energy firms charging people over the odds because the customers rarely, if ever, look at their bank statements (although now I believe they have to tell their customers about the best deal available) and gyms who like it when people sign up in early January and never visit past March but don’t cancel their subscription.
