One of the most fascinating things that got me interested in internet marketing in late 2006 was the business model of creating and selling digital products.

The was advice everywhere, often in the form of ebooks with titles like “Make money while you sleep”, “Bum Your Way To Internet Success” and “Fast eBook Profits”.

The central theme of all those books and all that advice was summed up perfectly in a quote I heard years later:

Trading time for money doesn’t scale.

Write an article for a client and you get paid for the time it takes you to produce it (and not just the time it takes to sit down and put words on the page but also the years of practice and experience you’ve built up to reach that point).

Create a product that sells and ships automatically while you’re watching football or sitting on a beach and you get paid for every purchase.

That’s where the scale is.
